Digital Self Reliance – Let’s Do PGP

During our last meeting, we agreed to use the open source software Discourse (discourse.org) for a community discussion board, and to host future online communication (moving away from Meetup).

One member has mentioned bringing some hardware that we can setup at CT Hackerspace to host the DSR discourse software. We can explore the details later during this gathering.

Another member raised the topic of encrypting email messages using PGP. Others were interested – and I find this to be something useful we can learn, practice and use during and after this meetup.

Thus, for this month – let’s learn about PGP encryption and how to use it with email. Although our email providers will still see who is communicating with whom, we will begin moving outside of their radar starting with the content within our emails.

Please bring your digital communicator of choice (mobile, laptop, etc.) and be ready to gather around the table and monitor to learn how to PGP encrypt email.

Agenda:
7:00 – 7:15 – Casual Conversation, refreshments(?).
7:15 – 8:15 – Fire up PGP tools and docs and begin messaging with PGP workshop-style.
8:15 – 8:30 – Break and brainstorm our discourse forum setup.
8:30 – 9:00 – Informal Discussion, hacking, brainstorming, knowledge sharing, etc.

Looking forward to our next meeting and beginning to take concrete action toward DSR.

PS: Please answer the question about refreshments, and please RSVP by 1:00pm on Tuesday 1/9.

Thanks.
